Is Using Primer Always Necessary in the Central Coast?

When it comes to home maintenance projects, the tempting thing to do is try and find the absolute fastest way to get from Point A (the start) to Point B (back inside relaxing). And yet, at the same time, you know it’s important to do the project properly. If you don’t, you might just be doing it again fairly soon, and nobody wants that.

With that in mind, a lot of homeowners find themselves asking a crucial question before tackling an exterior painting project: do I need to use primer?

What Exactly Does Primer Do?

Before you decide whether you need it, let’s take a closer look at what primer actually does.

  • Conceals - Did you repair a portion of your siding? If so, primer will help to smooth the surface so that it becomes invisible under the topcoat.
  • Provides a foundation - Primer creates a receptive surface for the paint to grip onto, allowing for a more sturdy, long-lasting finish. This foundation is especially crucial if you are painting over bare wood, or a slick existing finish that paint would have trouble sticking to on its own.
  • Transitions - Are you making a drastic color change? A coat of primer will cover the original color, both creating a more neutral surface for the new paint and decreasing coverage issues.
  • Primer also is important to use if you are switching from one kind of paint to another, such as oil-based to latex.

When Is Primer Not Necessary?

You can get away with just using paint if you are simply refreshing an existing color, if the surface is clean and in good condition, and if there are not any bare spots. This refers more to touch-ups. In the majority of cases, primer will be a real asset for a larger project.

There is also one other interesting concept to keep in mind: skipping primer does not always guarantee that you’ll save money or time. Think about it this way: would you rather lay down one coat of primer and two coats of paint, or no primer and four coats of paint? Paint is more expensive as well, so using much more to achieve a similar degree of coverage is going to cost more.

Sometimes an initial investment of time really does pay off in the long-run.
