Kitchen Color Tips from a Residential Painter

Are you planning a kitchen painting project?

There are few better ways to quickly ramp up your interior style; kitchens today are typically a central space, setting the tone for much of your home.

Picking a color can be a little tricky, however, especially since your kitchen is a point where numerous colors, textures, patterns, and materials come together. And, you want these elements to unite, not collide.

How Do You Pick the Right Paint Color for a Kitchen?

As you plan your kitchen update, keep these color selection tips in mind:

  • Pick Your Wall Color Last - Why? Well, walls are easily changed, but colors like counters, cabinets, flooring, and appliances are a little tougher to swap out. Find the “fixed colors” that you love first, and then focus on your perfect wall color later.

  • Find a Color In Your Materials - This is actually an interior design/decorating technique, too. If you find a color within an existing element that you like, you can draw it out, color match it, and use it on your walls. In your kitchen, you might find colorful inspiration within your countertop, backsplash, etc...

  • Monochromatic Paint Scheme - This is one of the easiest, most effective ways to create a coordinated color scheme. How does it work? Well, you find one color that you love, and then have your painter/paint supplier modify it just slightly by changing the tint, shade, etc... You can collaborate with them to achieve the specific look you want. The end result, however, are colors that are different, but obviously related. You might want to paint your kitchen cabinets, for example, then modify that color just a bit for your walls to create a nice, cohesive style.

  • Go Neutral or Bold - Neutral paint isn’t just a cop-out; it’s a stylish, versatile alternative that homeowners today are flocking to. If you’re feeling adventurous, you also could go for a bold paint color (ask your painter for ideas, tips, or suggestions). If it’s enough of a clear statement, bold can work beautifully.
